Getting There
Subway Line 1 to Tiananmen West or East for the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. Lines 2 & 5 stop
at Yonghegong Lama Temple. Line 8 has a station at Shichahai for the Drum and Bell Towers.
Bus Bus 5 runs from the Drum Tower past Forbidden City to Tiananmen Square.
The Sights in a Day
Catch the flag-raising ceremony at sunrise in Tiananmen Square ( Click here
). Then join the locals who file reverently past Mao Zedong's mummified re-
mains in the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall ( Click here ) , before being first in line
when the Forbidden City ( Click here ) opens. Spend the rest of the morning exploring
this extraordinary complex, before exiting via the north gate and climbing the hill in Jing-
shan Park ( Click here ) for superb views over the complex.
After a late lunch of dumplings at Zuo Lin You She ( Click here ) , hop on the
subway to the Drum and Bell Towers ( Click here ) . From there, wander east
through the surrounding hutong (narrow alleyways) towards the Lama Temple ( Click
here ) . Catch your breath at the peaceful Confucius Temple ( Click here ) .
