Day One
Only one day in Beijing? Then fight that jetlag and be out of bed in time to catch
the flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen Square ( Click here ) , the symbolic
heart of the Chinese universe. Wander just south of the square for a breakfast snack from a
street vendor, before being first in line when the astonishing Forbidden City ( Click here )
opens at 8.30am. Spend the morning checking out the palace, and try to take in some of its
less-visited exhibitions of imperial treasures.
After a lunch of delicious dumplings at Duyichu ( Click here ), dive into the his-
toric shopping and hutong neighbourhood of Dashilar ( Click here ). From there,
it's a short hop by subway or taxi to the Temple of Heaven Park ( Click here ) . Marvel at
the peerless temples, the ultimate in Ming dynasty architecture, and take a breather in the
shade of the ancient cypress trees that line the park.
It's time for Peking duck! Head to Beijing Dadong Roast Duck Restaurant (
Click here ) for a superb introduction to the capital's most famous dish. Round the
evening off with a cocktail at Apothecary ( Click here ) or Migas ( Click here ) in Sanli-
tun, Beijing's nightlife hub.
