When to Go
Winter (Nov-Mar) Below freezing temperatures and sometimes snow. Air pollution can
be bad. Far fewer visitors in town, so sights are crowd-free.
Spring (Apr-May) The short spring is pleasant, but tourist numbers start to increase.
Summer (June-Aug) Very hot and humid; hotels are booked out and the main sights are
packed.
Autumn (Sep-Oct) Clear skies; the best weather of the year. Domestic visitors descend
on the capital in the first week of October.

Top Tip During the three major Chinese public holidays ( Click here ) , hotel prices
jump dramatically and accommodation is hard to find. Book ahead.
Dongcheng North is the handiest area to stay in for sights, but Xicheng and North Chaoy-
ang are also popular.
