In keeping with Beijing's emergence as a true world city, the capital's museums
and galleries have made great strides in the last few years. Now, Beijing can
boast of being one of the most happening places on the planet for contemporary
art, while scattered around town there are museums devoted to everything from
ancient architecture to sandalwood.
Beijing's Museum Makeover
Once characterised by 'Chinglish' captions (or none at all), sullen staff and a deadening,
lifeless atmosphere seemingly designed to send visitors to sleep, Beijing museums have
been given a radical makeover since the 2008 Olympics. There are now a few, like the out-
standing Capital Museum, which can rank with the best in Europe, while others, such as the
Poly Art Museum, are amazing to visit just because of the incredible exhibits they house.
