Arthur M Sackler Museum of Art & Archaeology
MUSEUM
Excellent collection of relics housed on the campus of Peking University. Exhibits include
the Jinniushan Man (a 280,000-year-old skeleton), bronze artefacts, jade pieces and a host
of other relics from primordial China. Afterwards make sure to wander around the pleas-
ant campus, a refreshing break from Beijing's frantic mayhem.

Great Bell Temple
Ring the bell here and half of Beijing will hear it; the centrepiece of this temple, which
was once where emperors came to pray for rain, is a massive Ming-dynasty bell that
weighs in at almost 50 tonnes. There's also a huge array of less imposing bells, all in-
scribed with delicate characters. There's an audio-guide available for ¥10, although
earplugs might be more suitable.
