The Sights in a Day
Your first stop has to be the Summer Palace ( Click here ). Spend the morning
exploring the former imperial playground and its tranquil and beautiful collec-
tion of gardens, temples and pavilions. Make sure to climb Longevity Hill ( Click here )
for views across the capital, and promenade around the shores of Kunming Lake ( Click
here ) .
Head to the Fragrant Hills ( Click here ) , where there are numerous places for
lunch on the road to the north gate, and wander the trails, making sure to stop in
at the Azure Clouds Temple ( Click here ) . Alternatively, temple-hop through some of
Haidian's standout shrines, such as the Wanshou Temple ( Click here ) and the Wuta
Temple ( Click here ) .
In the evening, make tracks for Wudaokou ( Click here ) , the capital's student
heartland. There are lots of buzzing cafes and bars here to start or end the night
in, as well as some of Beijing's best Korean and Japanese eateries. You could also check
out the Golden Peacock ( Click here ) , just one of the many ethnic minority restaurants
serving up cuisines from across China that cluster in the Weigongcun area, north of the
National Library metro station.
