Silk Market 秀水市场
秀水市场
A Beijing legend, the Silk Market (14 Dongdaqiao Lu 东大桥路 14 ; 10am-8.30pm;
Yong'anli) is the perfect place to get into haggling mode. Staffed by a cunning crew
of young women who will alternately flatter and cajole you into purchasing their
wares at inflated prices, the market is known for its high-quality clothing fakes, but
the silk is genuine and it's also a good place to find cashmere.
Five Colours Earth 五色土
五色土
There's a growing number of quality, home-grown fashion designers in Beijing. The
women behind Five Colours Earth (25th fl, Bldg 14, Jianwai Soho, 39 Dongsanhuan Zhonglu
三环中路 39 号建外 Soho14 号楼 25 ; 10am-5pm; Guomao) do hip tops, skirts
and jackets with a traditional Chinese twist. The clothes all incorporate the elaborate
embroidery unique to the Miao ethnic minority in southwest China. Most of their
gear is sold abroad; you can pick it up far cheaper here.
Xiao Wang's Family Restaurant 小王府
小王府
Take a lunch break at this old Beijing favourite. Xiao Wang's ( 6594 3602; 2 Guanghua
Dongli; 2 ; mains ¥30-50; 11am-10.30pm; Jintaixizhao) has been serving up
its reasonably priced medley of dishes (the Peking duck is especially good value)
from across China for almost 20 years at this three-storey venue. It's down an alley
off Guanghua Lu.
Shard Box Store 慎德阁
慎德阁
Using porcelain fragments from Ming and Qing dynasty vases that were destroyed
during the Cultural Revolution, this fascinating family-run store (4 Ritan Beilu 日坛北
4 ; 9am-7pm; Yong'anli) creates beautiful and unique shard boxes, bottles and
jewellery. The boxes range from the tiny (¥30), for storing rings or cufflinks, to the
large (¥8000). It also repairs and sells jewellery, mostly sourced from Tibet and Mon-
golia.
