By far the best place in Beijing to shop for arts, crafts and
antiques is this wonderfully chaotic market (

). With around 3000
dealers here, what's on view is nothing less than a compen-
dium of Chinese curios and an A to Z of Middle Kingdom
knick-knacks. It's at its biggest and best on the weekends,
when up to 50,000 visitors a day descend on it in search of
that rare piece of Ming dynasty porcelain that will change
their lives.
