大山子艺术区
The 798 Art District (Qi Jiu Ba Yishu Qu), also known as
Dashanzi ( 大山子 ), is where the Chinese contemporary
art boom began. Housed in a vast and sprawling former
electronics factory, its numerous galleries remain the centre
of the Beijing art scene. The area has also sprouted cafes
and restaurants, and you can easily spend a day here ex-
ploring the galleries while musing on how the factory's
transformation into a global art hub mirrors China's march
from Maoism to capitalism.

BTAP
BTAP (Ceramics Third St; 10am-6pm Tue-Sun) , or Beijing Tokyo Arts Projects, was one of the
original 798 galleries and, as the name suggests, showcases not just Chinese artists, but
Japanese (and sometimes Korean) ones, too. As with many of the galleries in 798, multi-
media and installations are big here; they're ideally suited to the huge space this gallery oc-
cupies.
