The Sights in a Day
Start the day at the Capital Museum ( Click here ) , Beijing's finest and the
place to get the lowdown on local folklore. Then strike east by metro to Liu-
lichang , Beijing's premier street for antiques and calligraphy. From there, it's a short
stroll through the hutong to some of the oldest shops in Beijing.
Try the famed steamed dumplings on offer at Goubuli ( Click here ) , before
jumping back on the subway to spend the afternoon at Beihai Park ( Click here
) and neighbouring Houhai ( Click here ) . There are temples to explore within the park,
and boats to laze around on, or if it's winter hire a pair of ice skates.
Cool restaurants, such as 4Corners ( Click here ) , abound around Houhai. The
south of this neighbourhood is renowned for its Peking opera and acrobatics
shows, and you can't leave town without seeing one of those. The Huguang Guild Hall (
Click here ) is a hugely atmospheric Peking opera venue, while the high-wire display at
the Tianqiao Acrobatics Theatre ( Click here ) is awesome. If you want a more relaxed
evening, then join the local jazz fans at the very mellow East Shore Jazz Café ( Click
here ) .
