Qianmen Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant
$$$
PEKING DUCK
The most popular branch of Beijing's most famous destination for duck (check out the
photos of everyone from Fidel Castro to Zhang Yimou), this place is geared to the tourist
hordes (both domestic and foreign). But if the service is peremptory, then the duck, which
is roasted in ovens fired by fruit-tree wood, is very tasty and juicy.

Lost Heaven
$$$
With a lovely setting within the restored former legation quarter, Lost Heaven specialises
in the folk cuisine of Yunnan Province in China's southwest. Try the Dai-style roast pork
in banana leaf (¥68), or one of the many splendid salads. But all the dishes on the extens-
ive menu are enticing, while there's an elegant outside area and attentive service. Book
ahead.

CHINESE DUMPLINGS
GOOGLE MAP
A hangover from the Qing dynasty, the house speciality here are
shaomai,
the delicate
dumplings that originated in eastern China. They're delightful little bundles of meat, fish
or vegetables, so be prepared to queue for a table at weekends.

Bianyifang
$$$
Less touristy than the other duck options in the area, Bianyifang cites a heritage that dates
back to the reign of the Qing emperor Xianfeng. The birds here are roasted in the
menlu
style - in a closed oven, as opposed to a half-open one where the duck hangs to cook -
