Getting There
Subway Take Line 5 to Tiantandongmen for Temple of Heaven Park and Hongqiao Pearl Market. Use the
same line to travel north to Chongwenmen for Ming City Wall Ruins Park and Southeast Watchtower. Line 2 also
stops at Chongwenmen, as well as at Qianmen for Peking duck restaurants and the former Legation Quarter.
The Sights in a Day
Get to the Temple of Heaven Park ( Click here ) nice and early to see locals
starting their day by dancing and practising taichi under the ancient and gnarled
cypress trees that line this park. Then you'll be in pole position to explore the Temple of
Heaven complex when it opens at 8am. Make sure to test the remarkable acoustic qualities
of the Echo Wall ( Click here ) before the crowds get there.
Exit the park by the east gate and walk a few hundred metres north to the
Hongqiao Pearl Market ( Click here ) , where five floors of pearls, jewellery
and jade await you. After browsing away, hop the subway for the short ride to the Ming
City Wall Ruins Park ( Click here ) and the Southeast Watchtower ( Click here ) . From
there, you can wander west through the surviving hutong of the neighbourhood towards
Qianmen.
Low key it may be, but this district has some of the best and most traditional
Peking duck restaurants in town, such as the Liqun Roast Duck Restaurant (
Click here ) . Alternatively, there are fine dining options like Lost Heaven ( Click here ) in
the restored former Legation Quarter.
