Hutong
The very essence of Beijing, the hutong ( 胡同 ) are the an-
cient alleyways that cut across the centre of town. Wander-
ing them is an essential part of any visit to the capital. Not
only do these enchanting passageways offer a glimpse of
what old Beijing was like, but they are still home to around
20% of the residents of the inner city. Diving into them is
by far the best way to experience Beijing's intensely dra-
matic and unrestrained street life.
Getting There
Subway For the Drum Tower,
take Line 8 to Shichahai.
Lines 2 or 5 for Yong-hegong
Lama Temple.
Line 2 to Qianmen for hutong
southwest of Tiananmen Sq.
