In-Depth Information
In Example 11.6.4, the five macros defined in Section 11.4 are building blocks that the SAS_2_EXCEL
macro uses. Example 11.6.5 used the SAS_2_EXCEL macro, which in turn uses all five of those building
block macros.
11.7 Conclusion
DDE is an old technology, but many people still find it useful. I have often found that generating code that
can be reused is far more useful than rewriting the same code. I build libraries of reusable code; then I
include and use the code. I set it up so that one piece of code can be used for many applications. SAS
macros work well to provide reusable code. The SAS_2_EXCEL macro described in this chapter is one of
those pieces of code. I can use any input Excel file and produce any output Excel file with minimal changes
to the parameters. The SAS_2_EXCEL macro call identifies the input and output files, the locations to
change, the movement of data, and the formatting of the data. The macro call does not say how it will be
done. The pages of SAS code that define the DDE macro SAS_2_EXCEL fills in the “HOW”. DDE is the
kind of application that requires small changes to do just about everything, These macros help to make that
job simpler.
