membranes. Most of the isolates were Mycobacterium species. Samples of the
same soils incubated with PAH crystals in suspension (no membrane) pro-
duced mainly less hydrophobic Sphingomonas species. However, very few of
the Mycobacterium isolates were able to grow on, or cometabolize, fluoran-
thene or pyrene. Most were phenanthrene degraders. Thus, PAH metabolic
diversity appears to be quite variable. Hydrophobic bacterial cell surfaces
are apparently not a prerequisite for metabolic diversity.
A modified enrichment procedure and plate screening technique used
in this study to isolate PAH degraders from contaminated soils and sedi-
ments was the method employed by Kiyohara et al. (1982). However, we
