Medusa Heads
Two columns feature striking bases carved with the head of Medusa. One is upside down,
the other on its side. When the building functioned as a cistern, both would have lain be-
neath the surface of the water. Now revealed, they provide the building with an element of
mystery.
Top Tips
The cistern is a blissfully cool retreat on hot summer days - visit in the afternoon, when the city's heat can be
particularly oppressive.
Watch young children carefully, as the walkways over the water don't have much of a safety barrier.
