Christ Enthroned with Empress Zoe & Constantine IX Monomakhos
This mosaic portrait in the upper gallery depicts Zoe (r 1042), one of only three Byzantine
women to rule as empress in their own right.
The Virgin Mary, Emperor John Comnenus II & Empress Eirene
Another wonderful mosaic, this time featuring 'John the Good' on the Virgin's left and his
wife, who was known for her charitable works, on the Virgin's right. Their son Alexius,
who died soon after the portrait was made, is depicted next to Eirene.
Viking Graffiti
Graffiti dating from the 9th century is carved into a marble banister in the upstairs south
balcony. It is thought to have been the work of a mercenary called Halvdan.
