In-Depth Information
Ignore taxi drivers who insist on a fixed rate as these are much higher than you'd pay us-
ing the meter.
Note that few of the city's taxis have seatbelts.
If you take a taxi over either of the Bosphorus bridges, it's your responsibility to cover
the toll. The driver will add this to the fare.
Metro
Best for… Trips to the airport.
One service connects Aksaray with the airport, stopping at 15 stations on the way. Ser-
vices depart every 10 minutes or so from 5.40am until 1.40am and a jeton costs 2.
Another service connects Şişhane, near Tünel Sq in Beyoğlu, with Taksim Sq at the op-
posite end of İstiklal Caddesi. From Taksim Sq, a line travels to business and residential
suburbs northeast. Services run every five minutes or so from 6.15am to midnight. Jetons
cost 2.
Works are currently underway to extend the Taksim-Şişhane route over the Golden Horn
via a new metro bridge and under the Old City to Yenikapı via stops at Unkapanı and Şe-
hzadebaşı. It will then connect with the metro to Aksaray and with a transport tunnel be-
ing built under the Bosphorus as part of the city's huge Marmaray transport project.
Bus
Best for… Exploring the Bosphorus villages.
The major otobus (bus) stations are at Taksim Sq, Beşıktaş, Eminönü, Kadıköy and
Üsküdar.
Most services run between 6.30am and 11.30pm.
