In-Depth Information
Hasırcılar Caddesi
The shops lining this narrow street running parallel to the Golden Horn sell
everything from teapots to toothbrushes. Stock up on provisions or grab a snack at
Namlı ( www.namlipastirma.com.tr ; Hasırcılar Caddesi 14-16, Eminönü; 6.30am-7pm Mon-Sat; ;
Eminönü) , a deli known for its huge selection of pastırma (spiced, air-dried beef), spe-
ciality cheeses and ready-made mezes.
Rüstem Paşa Mosque
This diminutive mosque is a gem. Dating from 1560, it was designed by Mimar Sin-
an for Rüstem Paşa, son-in-law and grand vizier of Süleyman the Magnificent. A
showpiece of the best Ottoman architecture and tilework, it's accessed via stairs off
Hasırcılar Caddesi or off a side street to the right (north). Avoid visiting during pray-
er times, when local shopkeepers worship here.
Galata Bridge
This İstanbul icon carries a constant flow of locals crossing between Beyoğlu and
Eminönü, hopeful anglers trailing their lines into the waters below, and a changing
procession of street vendors hawking everything from fresh-baked simits (sesame-
encrusted bread rings) to Rolex rip-offs. Consider enjoying a beer and nargile while
watching the ferries ply the surrounding waters.
