In-Depth Information
to explain systemic properties in molecular properties, this methodology requires
that the systemic property be described in physical terms, with chemical com-
ponents or processes identified. In this event, causal mechanisms can be traced
from the molecular level to the systems level. This method does not promise to
explain systemic properties that are defined in non-physical terms, as molecular
correlates of such properties only beg the question of causality. The choice of
our method defines what can be known with the relative certainty offered by
physics and that is the philosophy usually known as physical reductionism.
