In-Depth Information
Madison & Friends Clothing for kids that's both cute and wearable is the
specialty here, from baby-size leather bomber jackets to yoga pants for toddlers.
A separate back room caters to older kids and tweens—including a staggering
array of jeans. 940 N. Rush St. (at Oak St.). & 312/642-6403. Subway/El: Red Line to Chicago.
Psycho Baby The definitive sign that Bucktown has gentrified? The opening
of this everything-for-baby shop. The prices may sometimes cause a double-take
($60 for shoes that your kid will outgrow in 3 months?), but the creative selec-
tion and happy vibe make it fun for browsing. 2911 N. Broadway (between Diversey
Pkwy. and Belmont Ave.). & 773/665-7400. Subway/El: Brown Line to Diversey.
VINTAGE FASHION/RESALE SHOPS
Beatnix This solid vintage store, good for day-to-day and dress-up items, also
carries a huge selection of old tuxes. Both men's and women's apparel is avail-
able. 3400 N. Halsted St. (at Roscoe St.). & 773/281-6933. Subway/El: Red Line to Addison.
The Daisy Shop A significant step up from your standard vintage store, The
Daisy Shop specializes in couture fashions. These designer duds come from the
closets of the city's most stylish socialites and carry appropriately hefty price tags.
Even so, paying hundreds of dollars for a pristine Chanel suit or Louis Vuitton
bag can still be considered a bargain, and well-dressed women from throughout
the world stop by here in search of the perfect one-of-a-kind item. 67 E. Oak St.
(between Michigan Ave. and Rush St.). & 312/943-8880. Subway/El: Brown Line to Sedgwick.
Hollywood Mirror You'll find two floors of fun, recycled stuff, including lots
of blue jeans on the first floor and 1950s furniture and lamps in the basement.
Sure, some of the '70s disco suits will appeal only to ironic club kids, but the
selection of clothes is so large that a patient search through the racks is usually
rewarded with a great wool jacket or classic pinstriped blouse. Don't miss the
huge collection of so-out-they're-in-again bowling shirts (many are mono-
grammed, so you might find one that literally has your name on it). 812 W. Bel-
mont Ave. (at Clark St.). & 773/404-4510. Subway/El: Red Line to Belmont.
McShane's Exchange This consignment shop has a selection that's a
few steps above the standard thrift store, and for designer bargains it can't be
beat. The store expands back through a series of cramped rooms, with clothes
organized by color, making it easy to scope out the perfect black dress. The
longer a piece stays in stock, the lower the price drops—and I've done plenty of
double-takes at the price tags here: Calvin Klein coats, Prada sweaters, and
Armani jackets all going for well under $100. If that's not tempting enough,
you'll also find barely used shoes and purses. McShane's also has another loca-
tion at 1141 W. Webster St. ( & 773/525-0211 ), with a similar selection. 815 W.
Armitage Ave. (at Halsted St.). & 773/525-0282. Subway/El: Brown Line to Armitage.
Una Mae's Freak Boutique Go for the name, stay for the gear. Here's a
Wicker Park down-and-funky blast from the past. 1422 N. Milwaukee Ave. (2 blocks
south of North Ave.). & 773/276-7002. Subway/El: Blue Line to Damen.
Wisteria This is a very fun and lovely store (great hats and handbags) in the
thick of the trendy North Southport Avenue corridor, right next door to the mar-
velous old Music Box Theatre revival cinema house. 3715 N. Southport Ave. & 773/880
5868. Subway/El: Brown Line to Southport.
WINE & LIQUOR
Binny's Beverage Depot This River North purveyor of fermented
libations is housed in a delightfully no-frills warehouse space, and it offers an
