staffed, this hotel has fresh and clean well-furnished
en-suite a/c rooms with TVs and minibars. The more
expensive have partial river view s. Th e good Baan Peakmai

Kaing Kaing Guesthouse Riverfront, near the old
boat dock T 035 674 7111. One of many good-value
Khmer-run guesthouses in town, right on the riverfront.
The fan rooms - most with furnitureless balconies and river
views - are tid y an d well furnished. The friendly staff don't
speak English. $10

Comfortable modern hotel with business-class a/c rooms
and a riverside restaurant-bar. The more expensive rooms

AROUND KOH KONG
4 Rivers Ecolodge Tatai village, 20km out of town on
the road to Phnom Penh T 023 217358, W ecolodges
.asia. In a magnificent location on the river, this resort
offers luxury to the point of decadence in fan-cooled
floating tents containing four-poster beds, DVD players and
all other mod cons, while also trying to neutralize its
carbon footprint with sustainable building materials and
solar electricity, among other measures. River- and land-
based tours, includi ng tri ps up to the thundering Tatai
rapids, are available. $200
The Rainbow Lodge Tatai River, 20km towards
Phnom Penh T 012 160 2585, W rainbow
lodgecambodia.com. Secluded ecolodge with
seven stilted bungalows (with fans) set in verdant
scrubland with river views; eco initiatives include solar
power and rainwater collection. Rates include breakfast,
lunch and three-course dinners (menu choices
available), and use of kayaks. They can organize treks to
the Cardamom Mo unta ins and boat trips to the
waterfalls. Cash only. $80

simple, roomy, family bungalows with a/c, TVs, DVD
players and mini fridges in an idyllic garden. There's also a
nice pool (non -resi dents $3), restaurant and great
mountain views. $25
Otto's Signposted 50m down a small road from the old
boat dock T 012 924249. Located in a traditional stilt-
house, this original backpacker guesthouse is still the
cheapest in town. Rooms (fan only) are small and rather
dingy with shared bathroo ms, but there's a good,
inexpensive restaurant and bar. $5
Thmorda Garden Riverside Resort 169 Neuk Kok
Village, 6km northwest of town T 035 690 0324,
W thmordagarden.com. On the far side of the river, the
en-suite a/c rooms here are small but well furnished and
cosy. Their adjacent over-water Crab Restaurant is
surprisingly stylish, with good food, nice cocktails and free
kayaks. A good option en route to Thailand if you wish to
bypass town. They offer free pick-ups fro m th e border and
Koh Kong bus station, if you book ahead. $25

W asiankohkong.com. This smart a/c restaurant serves a
delicious selection of Thai food, including many vegetarian
dishes, all at reasonable prices. The Thai green curry comes
highly
home-made ice cream. Daily 7am-midnight.
Crab Chack Koh Yor Beach. For a good local feed (or
sunset beer), this simple, family-run shack on the beach at
Koh Yor is pretty much unbeatable; prices are cheap
although curiously they're not shown on the menu
(barbecue fish and fried crab with black pepper both cost
20,000 riel). Daily 8am-8pm.
Fat Sam's High Street, near the roundabout T 097 737
0707. The expansive Welsh owner, Sam, is well known and
liked around town, and not only for his hearty English
breakfasts ($5). Popular with expats; has a pool table and
rents motorbikes. Mon-Sat 9am-10pm, Sun 4-10pm.

Café Laurent Riverfront, just north of the old

sumptuous plant-festooned restaurant-bar on stilts over
the river with a huge menu of Khmer, Thai and Western
dishes (grilled sea bass $9.50), plus wicked desserts and

Health The Sen Sok Clinic on Street 3 (24hr) has English-
speaking doctors and the hospital is 500m north of the
market, but you may be better off going across the border
to the better-equipped one at Trat.
Internet and phone calls International phone calls can
be made from one of the internet cafés along the high
street (internet around 3000 riel/hr).
Money Baht, riel and dollars are all accepted in town. Baht
can be exchanged at the reliable Ratha Exchange
(7am-5pm) on Street 2. There are a couple of ATMs in
town, including Acleda (near the bus station, Visa only) and
Canadia (no charge).
