Mondulkiri Protected Forest
Beyond Sen Monorom, a great swath of trees blankets the northern reaches of
Mondulkiri province and onwards into Rattanakiri. Some of the most pristine forest
can be found in the remote Mondulkiri Protected Forest , near the border with Vietnam,
only now opening up (slowly) to tourists. The forest is home to a superb range of
endangered wildlife including elephant, tiger, banteng, gaur and wild buffalo. Birds are
also plentiful, including rare Sarus cranes, giant ibis, and lesser adjutant. Visits and
homestays can be arranged through the WWF-supported Dei Ey Forest Experience
( W mondulkiritourism.org). The project works with indigenous Bunong communities
living within the forest, and visitor activities include collecting wild honey, walking
with elephants and working with villagers in the fields.
