Kampie, Sambor & Stung Treng
Dolphins and other attractions aside,
Kratie itself makes a pleasant spot to
rest up for a night or two, with a decent
clutch of hotels and some good
restaurants lined up along the serene
riverside. Parts of the town still retain
vestiges of their old French colonial
architecture, including the fine old
Governor's Residence , just south of the
centre (now signed as the Provincial
Council Kratie).

Wat Roka Kandal
Kratie riverfront, 2km south of the town centre
Dating from the late eighteenth/early
nineteenth century, the pretty little
temple of Wat Roka Kandal is among
the oldest in Kratie province. The
main vihara, nondescript from the
outside, conceals a beautiful interior
with delicately painted, wooden
hipped roof and pillars. The wat
also doubles as an exhibition space,
with local handicrafts sometimes
displayed inside.

Koh Trong
Directly opposite Kratie in the middle of the Mekong • Ferries
shuttle regularly between Kratie and the island from the boat
dock in the town centre (around 5min; 1000 riel)
The small island of Koh Trong provides
an interesting glimpse of rural river life
within easy striking distance of Kratie
town centre. Sights include a couple of
wats, a floating Vietnamese village
(located at the southwest of the island)
and endangered freshwater Cantor's
giant soft-shell turtles ( Pelochelys
cantorii ) - although they're not the
easiest creatures to spot, since they
spend most of their time almost
completely buried in sand or mud to
escape predators.
The best way to explore the island is
by bike (available for $1-2 on arrival
from the village community o ce near
the ferry landing stage, which saves you
lugging a bike across from Kratie on the
ferry). A complete circuit is 14km;
alternatively you can hire a horse cart or
tuk-tuk ($10) at the village community
o ce for a two-hour round trip.
