semi-orderly queues to board the ferries that crisscross the Mekong. Beyond the
river NR1 travels southeast through the sleepy provincial town of Svay Rieng and
eventually, Bavet, toward the Vietnamese border. Neak Leung is known for its river

The town's other culinary speciality is sparrow; you'll see plucked birds strung up
and ready for cooking.
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
1
NEAK LEUNG
By bus The bus from Phnom Penh arrives at the west bank;
the town's restaurants and market are all on the east bank.
Ferry tickets (300 riel) can be bought at the ticket o ce by
the tra c barrier at the end of the road, or while boarding.
Note that during public holidays the queues for the ferry
can be horrendous.
Destinations Bavet (10 daily; 2hr); Phnom Penh (10 daily;
2hr); Svay Rieng (every 30min; 1hr).
By shared taxi or minibus Shared taxis depart from the
transport stop on the western side of the river.
Destinations Bavet (10 daily; 1hr 30min); Phnom Penh
(10 daily; 1hr 30min); Svay Rieng (10 daily; 1hr).
leave for K'am Samnar (10,000 riel; 2hr) or you could
charter a speedboat ($55; 1hr); the boat leaves from
behind a blue-roofed warehouse that isn't signposted (if
you reach the bridge you've gone too far). The various
immigration and customs buildings at the border post
(daily 7am-8pm) are quite scattered, so you'll need to
rent a moto (about 4000 riel). After entering Vietnam at
Vinh Xuong, you need to take a xe om (moto in
Vietnamese; about $5) to get to Chau Doc, a journey of
less than an hour. From the central market at Chau Doc,
you can hop aboard a minibus bound for HCMC ($3).
Bavet: Moc Bai border crossing For direct services
between Phnom Penh and HCMC (and vice versa), you no
longer have to change buses at the Moc Bai border
crossing (daily 7am-8pm); the bus operator will handle
everything, although as with all crossings into Vietnam
you will need to get your visa beforehand in Phnom Penh.
If you're going it alone and haven't booked through
transport to HCMC, jump on a bus to Bavet and once
you've crossed the border, take a motorbike taxi or
minibus the 10km from Moc Bai to Go Dau, where you can
get direct onward transport to HCMC - from the border,
the journey should take less than 2hr. If you're coming
into Cambodia from Moi Bac, you can jump in a shared
taxi from Bavet to Phnom Penh (around $5) or take a
private ride for $50. If you get stuck, you could stay in one
of Bavet's many casinos.
TO VIETNAM
K'am Samnar: Chau Doc border crossing Many
people heading for Chau Doc in Vietnam go on organized
trips from Phnom Penh (try Capitol guesthouse; $10), in
which case your guide will arrange transfers between the
various different forms of transport. You will need to
organize your visa separately, though this can often be
done via your guesthouse, too. If you're going about it
independently, it's possible to take an express boat ($25-
35) from Phnom Penh to Chau Doc direct. You could also
make the journey by bus, though this is a little trickier -
catch a bus to Neak Leung and get off on the west bank,
from where it is a 350m walk south along the road
adjacent to the riverfront to the pier. Scheduled ferries
