avian inl uenza, and a second challenge on malaria in winter 2006/2007.
This challenge processed up to 80,000 compounds per hour, totaling 140
million compounds tested in the 4 months of the challenge. Furthermore, the
grid-enabled testing is much more cost effective than testing in research
laboratories. WISDOM estimates the total cost of computing resources,
power and time of running such a study on the grid as €3.6 million* on the
grid rather than some €350 million in a lab.

Digital Image Analysis
The DILIGENT project (http://www.diligentproject.org/), co-funded by
the European Commission, has the objective creating an advanced test-
bed that allows virtual e-Science communities to share knowledge and
collaborate in a secure, coordinated, dynamic and cost-effective way.
DILIGENT integrates grid and digital library technologies, which will lay
the foundations for a next-generation e-Science knowledge infrastructure
with many different research and industrial applications. Exploiting the
service-oriented architecture of EGEE, the DILIGENT services rely on
EGEE to provide the computing and (partially) storage resources required
for this goal.
In autumn 2007 the DILIGENT team used the EGEE infrastructure to
analyze 37 million images from the Flickr online database (http://www.
l ickr.com) at a rate of over 300,000 images per day. This analysis created
some 1120 million text and image objects (nearly 5 terabytes of data) con-
taining more than 150 million extracted features. This collection will be
used by the SAPIR project (http://www.sapir.eu) to develop new large-scale
* EGEE is not paid for this service. The costs include an estimation of the equipment the
tests are run on (which are contributed to the project by the resource centers), and the time
of members of EGEE and WISDOM that is funded by the EC or contributed by the
WISDOM members.
