In-Depth Information
3. One of the members of the NYSGrid.org technical working group
sent out an e-mail notice to many of the members of NYSGrid.org
stating that the NYSGRID Virtual Organization has been estab-
lished and that GRASE users were being moved without any
discussion or input from GRASE to NYSGRID in terms of their
primary VO. This was interesting for many reasons, not least of
which was the fact that no new users had yet to emerge owing to
the creation of the New York State Cyberinfrastructure Initiative
and NYSGrid.org had never approached NYS Grid about this
possibility.
4. The chair of the NYSGrid.org board sent out an e-mail to all
members notifying them that (a) there were new board members
added, (b) that this initiative was now part of the New York State
Network for Research and Education (NYSERNet), and (c) that the
board was now a steering committee to NYSERNet.
As of the time of writing, the approved one-year term of the initial board
has passed, and the board has not proposed by-laws to the membership,
has not asked for a vote or input from the membership on critical issues
such as its attempt at taking over the NYS Grid, creating a new virtual
organization (NYSGRID), adding new members to the board, and placing
this organization within a nonproi t organization dedicated to network-
ing within New York State (NYSERNet).
It is also interesting to note that none of the members of the board work
in the area of cyberinfrastructure, many are opposed to cyberinfrastruc-
ture and grid computing, and many do not think that grid computing cur-
rently makes sense in New York State. In fact, most of these members are
center directors, CIOs, and the like. However, this group has sent a pro-
posal to the governor of New York requesting funds for the operation of
the facilities and the establishment of a center(s) for education, outreach,
and training (i.e., they have requested funds for personnel to run machines
and do user support).
It
will
be
very
interesting
to
watch
the
progress
of
the
NYS
Cyberinfrastructure Initiative given its very awkward beginning.
2.5
Cyberinfrastructure is critical to advances in simulation and modeling.
In fact, one might claim that cyberinfrastructure is the cornerstone for
modern science and engineering, which requires the “creation, dissemination,
preservation, and application of knowledge.”* In this chapter, we presented
