standards such as Web services resource framework (WSRF) [6] and Web
services addressing (WS-Addressing) [7].
We have previously proposed a service-oriented HLA RTI (SOHR) frame-
work that implements an HLA RTI using grid services [8]. The various grid
services of SOHR cooperate with each other to provide the functionalities
of an HLA RTI as services. Federates participate in federations by invoking
specii c grid services without the installation of a heavyweight vendor-
specii c RTI software at the local site. Since grid services are used for
communications i rewalls can be pierced, and distributed simulations can
be conducted across administrative domains. Moreover, the various grid
service components can be dynamically deployed, discovered, and unde-
ployed on demand. All these features of SOHR enable convenient execution
of HLA-based distributed simulations on a WAN. The performance test of
SOHR in [8] was based on GT4.0.2, which does not support persistent
TCP/IP connections. With the newer version GT4.1.1, which supports per-
sistent TCP/IP connections, the performance is expected to be improved
signii cantly. This chapter elaborates on the design of SOHR and evaluates
its performance after its migration to GT4.1.1.
The rest of the chapter is organized as follows: Section 18.2 introduces
some related work on HLA-based distributed simulation on the grid.
Section 18.3 describes the framework overview of SOHR. After laborating
on the design details of the various framework components in Section
18.4, Section 18.5 describes the experiments conducted and their results.
Section 18.6 summarizes the major benei ts of SOHR. Finally, Section 18.7
concludes the whole chapter and overviews future work.

Three approaches can be dei ned for an HLA-based distributed simula-
tion on the grid, namely a grid-facilitated approach, a grid-enabled
approach, and a grid-oriented approach.

Grid-Facilitated Approach
In the grid-facilitated approach, grid services are dei ned to facilitate the
execution of HLA-based distributed simulations while the actual simula-
tion communications are through a vendor-specii c RTI. Several projects
using this approach are introduced in this subsection.
