image server. As shown in Figure 16.3, VM migration is achieved by a VM
mobility service. During a migration, a VM is reconstructed at the desti-
nation site according to its model, and linked with the functional units
prestored on the virtual image server local to the destination. During the
reconstruction some system parameters can be changed to adapt the new
local environment. The reconstructed VM image is called a VM skeleton.
The VM-skeleton reconstruction is achieved by an appropriate VM incar-
nation and deployment service. The current runtime state of user tasks or
system services is then migrated to and restored on the VM skeleton. The
runtime information transforms the skeleton into an active VM. In a coor-
dinated concurrent environment, a DVM directs and redirects VM com-
munications with a set of communication protocols during and after the
migration to ensure correct live communications between VMs. The VM
model is platform-independent, so it can be incarnated on various virtual-
ization platforms and under different management policies. By modeling,
incarnation, and redeployment, a DVM can naturally address the recon-
i guration and adaptation challenge. If a reconi guration is necessary, the
VM model is adjusted to rel ect the new coni guration through the VM
reconi guration and adaptation service and then the new model is incar-
nated and deployed to the new virtualization platform. The reconi gura-
tion could be at the VM level, such as remapping VMs to different resources
