Currently, many efforts are being focused on this new workl ow area
and the research work is fruitful. Below are some main topics related to
scientii c workl ow; however, the scope of scientii c workl ow is not lim-
ited to these [2,3]:

Scientii c workl ow modeling, execution, and scheduling in
support of computation, data, and transaction intensity

Application programming interface and graphical user interface

9.1.2
Scientific Workflow on a Grid
Scientii c workl ow is mainly concerned with the automation of scientii c
processes in which tasks are structured based on their control and data
dependencies. Due to the high computation performance requirement,
grid computing is one of the good infrastructures for its deployment [3-5].
Currently, some work toward th is area can be seen. Specii cally, the advan-
tages of grid computing include the ability to build dynamic applications
that orchestrate distributed resources, utilizing resources that are located
in a particular domain to increase throughput or reduce execution costs,
execution spanning multiple administrative domains to obtain specii c
processing capabilities, and integration of multiple teams involved in the
management of different parts of the experiment workl ow, thus promot-
ing interorganizational collaborations.
9.1.3
Some Related Work on Scientific Workflow
A number of research projects have developed tools and runtime infra-
structure to support composition and execution of scientii c workl ows
[3,4,6-8]. Due to the limit of space, we briel y review some of the related
