In-Depth Information
a virtual organization management system (VOMS) server during NGS
phase 2.
6.7.1.11 Promotion, Outreach, and Education
The NGS Support Center aims to promote the NGS and increase the
number of users by increasing awareness of the services provided. This
involves attendance at scientii c and grid conferences as well as peer-
reviewed conference submissions, a regular newsletter, press releases of
cutting-edge research performed on the NGS, and articles in relevant
literature from other bodies such as Joint Information Systems Committee
(JISC) and other grid organizations. Direct liaison with interested research
groups such as computational biologists is also undertaken and a great
deal of interaction takes place to deliver a service of high relevance to
research communities. The support center also works with the National
e-Science Center (NeSC) to promote the NGS service and grid computing
to UK academia.
6.7.1.12 Global Activities and Collaboration
The support center collaborates with other grid initiatives across the
world. The purpose of such collaboration is to provide leadership in areas
that we are advanced in, to leverage others' experience in areas that we
are developing in, and to collaborate in areas of mutual benei t. This col-
laboration takes many forms, such as co-development of software/grid
middleware, membership, and involvement in bodies such as Open Grid
Forum (OGF) and EGEE in order to inl uence, and adhere to, emerging
standards.
6.7.2
Additional Services Provided by the NGS Support Center
In addition to the core service activities of the support center, there are a
number of additional or auxiliary services that support and facilitate the
operation of the NGS. Some of these services, for example, the MyProxy
service, VOMS, and GridSam, can be used independently by projects that
may already have access to their own grid infrastructure and simply
require such additional tools without the need for installing them at their
own sites.
6.7.2.1 Monitoring Services
Monitoring services are provided to enable the overall health of the NGS
to be tracked on a day-to-day operational basis and to enable certii cation
of sites wishing to join the NGS.
