local systems can be shared across institutions to optimize use and provide
a return on investment. The NGS aims to pioneer systematic arrangements
that relieve the development load on both resource providers and resource
users. The NGS also supports the policy, operational, and monitoring
framework required to support the UK's grid infrastructure.
To oversee and manage the project the NGS appointed an executive
director, who has overall day-to-day responsibility for the project and
works in conjunction with the NGS Director (PI) and the NGS Technical
Director. Separate boards were created to oversee the project (NGS Board),
the project management (NGS Development Board), day-to-day manage-
ment of member sites and operational policies (NGS Technical Board), and
day-to-day technical implementation and system management (NGS
Operations Board). The work of the various boards is encapsulated in the
NGS project plan, which comprises nine work packages, plus a special
work package to interact with and include input from the Engineering
Task Force (ETF).

activities providing end-user support and operating auxiliary
