place to watch the world go by on the street below. The

samui.com. Located above a popular bar-restaurant of
the same name, The Wave offers good fan-cooled rooms,
all with shared cold-water shower. If you manage to bag
the room at the top of the building (B1650) you'll be
reward ed wit h a/c, hot water and your own roof terrace.

EATING
MAENAM
Angela's Bakery Almost opposite the police station on
the main through-road, east of the pier T 077 427396.
American-style, a/c diner, offering great breakfasts
(French toast B100) and a wide choice of sandwiches,
salads, soups and Western main courses, as well as home-
made cakes and apple pie (B100 with ice cream). Daily
8am-4pm.
Ko Seng On the road parallel to and just east of the pier
road T 077 425365. At this locally famous seafood
restaurant that's been on national TV, you buy your
seafood according to weight, or plump for noodles (B80)
or dishes such as kaeng som plaa (B200), a thin fish curry
with tamarind paste that can be spiced to order. Daily
10am-10pm.

LAMAI
Lamai's budget accommodation is concentrated around
the beach's northern and southern ends.
Amity Bungalows Southern end of the bay T 077

accommodation in a welcoming, organized place. Tightly
packed near the beach, the cheapest wooden bungalows
are battered but clean enoug h, with fan, veranda and
small bathroom. Double B400
Beer House In the central section of the northern part

A hidden, single-storey cement building at the back holds
a row of down-at-heel but very cheap rooms. Facilities are
basic, with cold shower and bucket-flush toilets. Pay more
for the very appealing bunga lows in its lush, shaded

Flower Paradise On the bay's northern headland T 077

the beach, a friendly, well-run German-Swiss place in a
small but beautiful garden. All the attractive, well-tended
bungal ows of varying sizes have verandas and hot water.

Though set back from the beach towards the main road,
this resort enjoys a spacious, leafy garden among palm
trees, and a small swimming pool. Clean, simple, en-suite,

A-frames are close together, but cheap, attractive and
located right on the beach. They consist of nothing more
than a mattress, fan and mosquito net, and have shared
cold-water bathrooms, but there's a good restaurant

BOPHUT
Juzz'a Pizza 2 Bophut village, 100m east of the pier
T 077 245663. Friendly, small, elegant restaurant with a
beachside terrace, serving excellent, authentic pizzas
(from B230), with vegetarian and seafood options, as well
as pastas, sandwiches and Thai and Western main courses.
Tues-Sun 4-11pm.
Satsuman Elysia Resort , Bophut village, 100m east of
the pier T 077 425029, W satsumansamui.com. Great
Japanese food, good service and killer cocktails; the
breaded chicken with fried onion, egg and rice is tasty and
hearty (B160), or treat yourself to a mixed sushi plate
(B390). Daily 4-11pm.

CHAWENG
For cheap Thai food, join local workers at the evening food
stalls of Laem Din market, on the road between the heart
of central Chaweng and Ban Chaweng.
Ninja Crepes Central/south Chaweng. This un-atmospheric
place is a popular option for cheap, good-quality Western
and Thai meals along with breakfasts and sweet and savoury
crepes. Main dishes around B70. Daily noon-11pm.
Noori Opposite Chaweng Buri Resort towards the north end
of central Chaweng. Superior Indian food (around B200/
dish) in relatively basic surroundings, including all the old
favourites such as chicken tikka masala, as well as plenty of
seafood and vegetarian options. Daily 11am-11.30pm.

LAMAI
Eldorado Just west of the central crossroads. Good-value
Swedish restaurant, serving a few Thai favourites and all
manner of tasty international mains. All-you-can-eat
barbecue on Wed (B260). Daily 3-10.30pm.
