with its gently sloping 6km strip of
white sand framed between the small
island of Ko Matlang at the north end
and the headland above Coral Cove in
the south. However, there has been
heavy development and resorts are piled
side to side along the stretch of road.
here are numerous tacky bars with
thumping nightlife set just a few steps
back from the beach, and diverse
watersports are also on offer here. An
ugly sprawl of amenities stretches for
2km behind the central section to the
round-island road and the original
village of Ban Chaweng.
Lamai and around
Lamai
is almost as heavily developed as
Chaweng and its nightlife is just as
tawdry, with planeloads of European
tourists sinking buckets of booze at
women's hai boxing, mud-wrestling
shows and hostess bars. Running roughly
north-south for 4km, the white
palm-fringed beach is, fortunately, still a
picture. It's possible to avoid the mayhem
