CAFÉS AND RESTAURANTS
Elliebum 114/3 Th Ratchamanka. A good spot to refuel
while looking around the old town: great coffee, delicious
fruit smoothies (B50) and top-notch breakfasts, sand-
wiches and Thai lunches (B60). Mon-Sat 8am-5.30pm,
Sun 8am-12.30pm.
Huen Phen 112 Th Ratchamanka. Probably Chiang Mai's
most authentic northern restaurant. Try local specialities
such as sai oua (sausage), kaeng hang lay (pork curry) and
khao soi (noodle curry; B40). The more attractive evening
restaurant around the back is pricier but also serves good
northern Thai food. Daily 8am-4pm & 5-10pm.
Kiat Ocha 41-43 Th Inthrawarorot, off Th Phra Pokklao (the
English sign says “Hainanese chicken”). Delicious and very
popular satay and khao man kai - boiled chicken breast
served with dipping sauces, broth and rice - at around B40 a
dish. Daily 6am-3pm, or until the food runs out.
La Fontana 39/7-8 Th Ratchamanka. Chiang Mai's best
Italian, dishing up great home-made pastas (B150-200),
authentic pizzas and delicious Italian desserts. Daily
11am-11pm; sometimes closed Tues and at lunchtimes in
low season.
Miguel's Th Chaiyapoom. Warm welcome, a relaxing
terrace and great Mexican food: feast on the nachos
grande for B160. Daily 10am-11pm.
Mit Mai 42/2 Th Ratchamanka. Excellent food in good-
sized portions from Yunnan province in southwest China,
including a zesty chicken salad and delicious snow peas
with Yunnanese ham (B90). Daily 10am-10pm.
The Olive Tree 29/7 Th Moonmuang. Small a/c café
serving Middle Eastern food, including pitta bread,
hummus (B100), home-made cheeses and yoghurts, right
near Tha Pae Gate. Daily except Fri 11am-3pm & 5-11pm.
Pho Vieng Chane Kad Klang Wieng, Th Ratchdamnoen, cnr
of Ratchaphakinai. Specializes in pho (pronounced “fur”; from
B30), a tasty noodle soup, but serves all manner of excellent,
cheap Vietnamese food. At the shared outside tables in the
grassy courtyard, you can also order good Italian dishes from
the neighbouring restaurant. Daily 8am-9pm.
Ratana's Kitchen 320-322 Th Tha Pae. A favourite
among locals both for northern specialities, such as kaeng
hang lay and khao soi , and for tasty Western breakfasts,
sandwiches and steaks, all at good prices (B50-150). Daily
7.30am-11.30pm.
Riverside Restaurant 9 Th Charoenrat T 053 243239.
Candlelit terraces by the water and an often heaving, lively
bar for gigs, and, on the other side of the road, a spacious
complex of rooms, terraces and a stage. Various soloists and
bands perform nightly on the two stages, with the tempo
increasing as the night wears on. Long, high-quality menu
of Western, Thai and northern Thai food and drinks on offer
( tom yam kung B160). For an extra B150, you can eat on
their boat, which cruises up the Ping River each evening at
8pm (boarding 7.15pm). Daily 10am-1am.

EATING AND DRINKING
There are several night markets with good street-food
stalls, including Somphet on Th Moonmuang, and by
Chiang Mai Gate on Th Bamrungburi.
NORTHERN FOOD
Northern food has been strongly
influenced by Burmese cuisine, especially
in curries such as the spicy kaeng hang
lay , made with pork, ginger and tamarind.
Another favourite local dish, especially for
lunch, is khao soi , a thick broth of curry
and coconut cream, with meat and both
soft and crispy egg noodles.
