Fort Siloso (Bus #1, #2 or #3 from
Beach Station; daily 10am-6pm; S$8;

12.30pm & 3.30pm), on the far western
tip of the island, is actually a cluster of
buildings and gun emplacements above a
series of tunnels bored into the island - it
guarded Singapore's western approaches
from the 1880s until 1956, but was
rendered obsolete in 1942, when the
Japanese invaded Singapore from the
north. Today, the recorded voice of
Battery Sergeant Major Cooper talks you
through a mock-up of a nineteenth-
century barracks, complete with living
quarters, laundry and assault course.
Sentosa also boasts a trio of nice
beaches (free trams connect the beaches)
on its southwestern coast, with a cluster
of restaurants nearby.
