SINGAPORE ZOO AND
NIGHT SAFARI
he award-winning Singapore Zoo (daily
8.30am-6pm; S$22) on Mandai Lake
Road is an open zoo, where moats are
used to separate the animals instead of
cages. hough leopards and pumas are
kept behind glass-fronted enclosures, this
is a more thoughtful and humane place
than conventional zoos and it manages to
approximate the natural habitats of the
animals it holds. here are more than
2800 animals here, representing more
than 300 species, so it's best to allow a
whole day for your visit.
Highlights include free-ranging
orang-utans, the new Frozen Tundra
exhibit which features Inuka, the first
polar bear to be born in the tropics,
wolverines and raccoon dogs, and Fragile
Forest, a 20,000-cubic-metre flight area
which immerses visitors in the richness
and diversity of a rainforest.
Even more spectacular than the daytime
zoo, and one of Singapore's highlights,
is undoubtedly the Night Safari (daily
7.30pm-midnight; S$35 inclusive of
tram ride), where you take the night tram
and walk the jungle trails of the park to
watch over 2500 animals including giant
fruit bats, Asian elephants, Indian rhinos,
giraffes, leopards, hyenas, otters,
pangolins and incredibly cute (but shy)
fishing cats play out their nocturnal
routines. Don't forget to watch the
impressive “Creatures of the Night” show.

Day-trips
Beyond the downtown area, Singapore
still retains pockets of greenery in
between its sprawling new towns. Most
rewarding is the justifiably world-famous
Singapore Zoo - one of the world's finest.
In the east, not too far from Changi
Airport, is Changi Village , in whose
prison the Japanese interned Allied troops
and civilians during World War II. It's
preceded by East Coast Park , a favourite
with rollerbladers, waterskiers and
seafood lovers. Sentosa Island , south of
HarbourFront, attracts beachgoers and
thrill-seekers with its white sand crescents
and 4-D amusement park rides.
EAST COAST PARK
While the beach at this vast waterfront
park, stretching for 10km along the
East Coast Parkway, is not the prettiest,
this shaded park itself is a favourite with
Singaporeans for rollerblading, biking,
windsurfing and eating - this is where
