Hugely popular Teochew Chinese place serving fish head
steamboat soup heated over charcoals. The secret here is
the tipoh, dried sole fish, which is added to the broth for
flavour. A meal will set you back about S$20. Daily
4.30pm-12.30am.
Tekka Market Food Centre Bukit Bimah at Serangoon
Rd (MRT); map p.683. One of the best and cheapest spots
in town to grab a quick meal - there's plenty of choice,
from Indian to Chinese dishes (mains from S$3). Daily
7.30am-11pm.
The Tiramisú Hero 121 Tyrwhitt Rd; map p.683. This
mellow café with fairy lights and mismatched furniture is
a sweet tooth's delight, offering ten different flavours of
tiramisu, from oreo to cinnamon, served in cute glass jars
(S$7.30). There are also mini portions (S$3.50) for those
just wanting to tickle their tastebuds while enjoying a
refreshing iced coffee (S$6.50). Thurs-Tues 11am-10pm.
Windowsill in the Woods 78 Horne Rd; map p.683. With
over fifteen creatively made sweet pies (S$7) including
banana almond brittle, lime vodka coconut and strawberry
lemon, this is the place for an energetic sugar kick as
you explore Little India. There are light dishes too, such as
roast beef sandwiches (S$14). Tues-Thurs 11am-9.30pm,
Fri 11am-10.30pm, Sat & Sun 10am-10.30pm.
Zam Zam 697-699 North Bridge Rd; map p.683. This
friendly place has been making great murtabak (S$5) since
1908; the biryani (S$6) is wonderful too. Daily 7am-11pm.
Long Bar 1 Beach Rd; map p.678. Though the Long Bar
has become a tourist trap in recent years, it is the
birthplace of the Singapore Sling (S$32) after all… Sip
away at the bar and shell your peanuts on the floor at
this iconic drinking hole in the swanky Ra es Hotel .

Oxwell & Co. 5 Ann Siang Rd; map pp.680-681.
Welcoming bar with eclectic interiors featuring wooden
and vintage furniture. Sample all manner of house-
distilled spirits, or try the excellent home-made gin and
tonics (S$12) available on tap. Tues-Sat 10am-1am.
The Penny Black 26-27 Boat Quay; map pp.680-681.
Named after the world's oldest stamp, this Victorian
London pub was built in Britain and painstakingly
reassembled on the busy waterfront. The outdoor
area is a great spot for people-watching over an Old
Speckled Hen or for watching a Premiership game.
Mon-Thurs 11.30am-1am, Fri & Sat 11.30am-2am,
Sun 11.30am-midnight.
La Terraza 12 Ann Siang Rd; map pp.680-681. The
fourth-floor breezy rooftop terrace of The Screening
Room is a great spot for drinks - soak in the city views
as you sip on a cocktail or two. Mon-Thurs 6pm-1am,
Fri & Sat until 3am.
CLUBS
Singapore's clubs have become increasingly sophisticated
in recent years: European and American dance music
dominates and many feature live cover bands. Clubs tend
to open around 9pm, and can stay open until 5 or 6am.
Most clubs have a cover charge of S$15-35, though this is
usually less for women.
Attica 3A River Valley Rd, #01-03, Clarke Quay; Clarke
Quay MRT; map pp.680-681. One of Singapore's most
popular clubs with professionals, expats and fashionistas.
The outside bar offers a welcome alternative to the
energetic dancefloor. A place to see and be seen, Attica is
generally still pumping in the wee hours. Fri & Sat S$32
entrance fee, including two free drinks. Wed-Sat
10.30pm-4am.
The Butter Factory 1 Fullerton Road; Ra es City MRT;
map pp.680-681. This club is a bit of a local legend, with a
loyal Singaporean clientele, DJs-of-the-moment dishing
out urban grooves, r'n'b and EDM, while trendies and
creatives check each other out in the Art Bar. Wed
11pm-4am, Fri & Sat 11pm-6am.
St James' Power Station 3 Sentosa Gateway T 6270
7676; HarbourFront MRT; map pp.676-677. The
refurbished power station has been converted into an
insomniac's dream; with more than six bars and clubs
under one roof, punters can move between salsa, karaoke
rooms and r'n'b without getting wet. One cover charge
(S$20 women, S$25 men); free Sun-Thurs. Daily
6am-6pm.
NIGHTLIFE
The lively area around Club Street, to the east of China
Town, is home to trendy restaurants and bars, and really
comes alive on the weekends. There are also a number of
bars and clubs in nearby Boat Quay.
BARS AND PUBS
It's possible to buy a small glass of beer in most bars and
pubs for around S$10, but prices can be double or treble
that, especially around Orchard Road or on the Quays.
During happy hour in the early evening, bars offer local
beers and house wine either at half price, or “one for one”
- you get two of whatever you order, but one is held back
for later. Most places close around 2am.
28 Hong Kong Street 28 Hong Kong St; map pp.680-
681. This inconspicuous “secret” bar with just a beige door
and no sign is well worth looking for. The atmosphere is
bustling and the wonderfully innovative cocktails (S$18)
will ensure you stay for more than one. Book ahead. Mon-
Wed 5.30pm-1am, Thurs until 2am, Fri & Sat until 3am.
Bar Stories 57A Haji Lane; map p.683. Sit at the bar and
watch the bartenders creatively mix colourful concoctions
of cocktails (S$25) with all the necessary love and care.
There's no menu so just wait and be surprised. Sun-Thurs
3pm-1am, Fri & Sat 3pm-2am.
