In-Depth Information
War II, but Intramuros still lays claim to
most of Manila's top tourist sights.
Manila Cathedral (daily 6.20am-
5.30pm; free), built in 1581, has been
destroyed several times by fire, typhoon,
earthquake and war. It was last rebuilt
between 1954 and 1958 and is still the
location of choice for Manila's top
society weddings.
Continuing southeast on General Luna
Street brings you to San Agustin Church
(daily 9am-noon & 1-6pm; P100
including the monastery), with its
magnificent interiors and trompe-l'oeil
murals. Built in 1599, it is the oldest
stone church in the Philippines. Next
door, the historic Augustinian monastery
(same hours) houses a museum of icons
and artefacts, as well as a restored
eighteenth-century Spanish pipe organ,
all of which are more interesting than
they sound.
he Casa Manila Museum in the Plaza
San Luis Complex is a sympathetically
re-created colonial-era house (Tues-Sun
9am-6pm; P75), redolent of a grander
age. Check out the impressive sala (living
room) where tertulias (soirees) and bailes
(dances) were held. he family latrine is a
two-seater, allowing husband and wife to
gossip out of earshot of the servants while
simultaneously going about their business.
Nearby, the Bahay Tsinoy (Tues-Sun
1-5pm; P100) showcases hundreds of
years of Chinese-Filipino integration, an
interesting stop before a visit to Binondo.
