Next door is the dark and labyrinthine
general market , selling fresh fruit and
vegetables, and behind that is the manic
waterfront fish market . At the northern
end of the central market is the night
market (daily 5-11pm) - hands down the
best place in KK for seafood (see p.500).

Sabah State Museum and
Heritage Garden
he Sabah State Museum on Jalan
Muzium (Sat-hurs 9am-5pm; RM20;
W museum.sabah.gov.my) is twenty
minutes' walk west of the town centre
along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman. In
the main building, its highlight is the
ethnographic collection , which includes
human skulls from Sabah's head-hunting
days, Penan blowpipes, traditional
costume and musical instruments, carved
totem poles and photos of Murut
hunters. he natural history section
showcases a fairly complete collection of
stuffed, pickled or pinned examples of
Borneo wildlife, but the Art Museum is
rather hit and miss. Outside, the Heritage
Village features authentic replicas of
Murut- and Rungus-style longhouses and
a Chinese farmhouse.
From the museum, a signposted path
leads to the rather bland Museum of
Islamic Civilization , though there are some
beautiful ornate swords and Qu'ran
pages. If you're heading to Sandakan, you
can use the same entrance ticket to enter
the Agnes Keith House (see p.506).
KK Heritage Walk
hose interested in the historical and
cultural side of the city should take the
informative and highly entertaining KK
Heritage Walk (Tues & hurs 9-11.30am;
RM200; W kkheritagewalk.com), which
can be booked through several tour
operators and consists of a walking tour
that includes visits to the North Borneo
War Memorial, the Atkinson Clock
Tower, Chinese herbal shops and
kopitiam (coffee shops), and culminates
in a treasure hunt at the Jesselton Hotel .

By plane KK's airport, served by numerous national and
international flights, is 6.5km southwest of the centre in

exception of AirAsia and Tiger Airways, which land at
Terminal 2. Minibuses (RM3) and city bus #1 connect
Terminal 1 with the central bus station, whereas Terminal
2 is served by buses #2 and #16A (RM1.50) from the City
Park bus station downtown. Taxis from the airport cost
RM35; buy a voucher at the pre-paid taxi counter. KK has
good connections within Sabah and Sarawak, as well as
regular flights to Brunei, mainland Malaysia, Indonesia,

Mari Mari Cultural Village
Even if you've already visited Sarawak's
Cultural Village (see p.481), it's still more
than worth your while to pay a visit to
the Mari Mari Cultural Village
( W marimariculturalvillage.com), its
counterpart in Sabah, which showcases
the traditional dwellings and crafts of
Sabah's ethnic groups. It's a very
interactive experience; the three-hour
tour involves your group being led
around by a traditionally attired guide
who takes you through the jungle
between the Dusun, Lundai, Kajan and
other houses, stopping at each one. At
each stop, there's an activity for you to try -
