but lovely when the weather is good. he
southern bay is more secluded, but does
have a couple of chalets.
By boat You'll have to decide in advance which bay you
want to stay in since the boats generally make stops only at
the major resorts of Genting, Paya, Tekek, Ayer Batang and
Salang (in that order); there are only occasional boats from
Mersing to Juara on the east coast. If you book a return boat
ticket in Mersing, you have to specify your return time at the
time of booking. If you booked a one-way ticket in Mersing,
Hikes around the island
Tioman has a good number of enjoyable
and challenging hikes, both along the
coast and in the interior. It's very easy to
get from ABC to Tekek; there's a
ten-minute path running up and over the
promontory. Also from ABC, a fifteen-
minute jungle trail leads over the headland
to the north, which - after an initial
scramble - flattens out into an easy walk,
ending up at secluded Penuba Bay . From
here, it's around an hour and a quarter to
gorgeous, secluded Monkey Beach, and
then another hour and a half to Salang.
his trail involves scrambling over rocky
outcrops and is not always easy to follow
(follow the power lines overhead).
Another tricky trail is the cross-island
one from Tekek to Juara, taking around
two or three hours and quite steep in
some places. he start of the trail in
Tekek (a five-minute walk from the
airstrip) is the only signposted concrete
path that heads off in the direction of the
local mosque before hitting virgin jungle
after about fifteen minutes; from Juara,
the trail starts opposite the jetty. here's
no danger of losing your way: cement
steps climb steeply through the greenery,
tapering off into a smooth, downhill path
once you're over the ridge. After an hour
or so, there is a waterfall - it's forbidden
to bathe here, since it supplies Tekek with
water. From the waterfall, it's another
hour or so to Juara village.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
Transport on the island is somewhat limited. In favourable
weather, walking and kayaking are good ways to explore
the island.
By plane Berjaya Air ( W berjaya-air.com) flights from
Kuala Lumpur and Singapore land at the airstrip in Tekek,
from where you'll have to take a boat taxi to the bay of your
choice (unless you're staying in ABC, in which case the
distance is easily walkable). During monsoon season, flying
is the only reliable way of getting on and off the island. The
baggage allowance limit is 10kg, unless you purchase the
most expensive Flexi ticket option, in which case it's 20kg.
