owner Sam, this quiet, laidback guesthouse has a selection
of cosy rooms set in two “old” and “new” buildings - both
equally charming with sociable communal areas. If you
stay in the “new” guesthouse, make sure to choose room

simple darkish rooms giving off a maze of hallways. The
congenial owner Howard takes his guests on educational
bike tours around the city. There's a funky rooftop terrace
that is a great spot to socialize over an evening beer. Dorm

EATING AND DRINKING
Sampling the spicy dishes of Nyonya cuisine - with its
emphasis on sour herbs such as tamarind, tempered by
creamy coconut milk - is a must in Malacca.
Capitol Satay 41 Lorong Bukit Cina. The queue at this
local institution starts as soon as the shutters are pulled
up mid-afternoon - hungry bellies wait in line for satay
(RM0.90 each) of skewered meat and fish, from pork liver
to fish balls, cooked in the sizzling peanut sauce pots found
at the centre of each table. Daily 5pm-midnight.
Discovery Café 3 Jln Bunga Raya. Three-litre towers of
beer (RM57.90) are on offer for the thirsty at this travellers'
hangout; the interior is decorated with old curios, while
local and Filipino pop bands take centre stage in the
outdoor seating area each day. Daily 9am-1am.
Geographer Café 83 Jln Hang Jebat. A backpacker
favourite, this leafy café, restaurant and bar offers a
large selection of veggie dishes, as well as Asian and
Western grub. There are live R&B bands on Fri, Sat &
Sun, while on Mon the musical flavour is jazz. Daily
10am-midnight.
Hoe Kee 4, 6 & 8 Jln Hong Jebat. This popular place
specializes in one of Malacca's traditional eats: tasty
chicken rice balls (RM4.50) that go down a treat. Daily
11am-3pm.
River View Guesthouse 94 & 96 Jln Kampong Pantai

in a 200-year-old house, this lovely guesthouse with high
ceilings and beautiful wooden floorboards has a leafy
terrace looking over the river - the views at night are
particularly spectacular. There's only one three-be d dorm ,

and as a result are a bit on the darkish side, but are

Jonker Walk Night Market On Friday, Saturday and
Sunday evenings, Jonker Walk becomes a pedestrian
street, lined with all manner of food stalls - a great way to
sample local specialities such as otak-otak (spicy fish paste
grilled in banana leaf ), popiah (mega spring roll stuffed
with prawns, garlic, carrot, palm sugar and chilli), cendol
(shaved ice topped with flavoured syrups, coconut milk
and jelly) and much more. Snacks from RM3.
Jonker 88 88 Jln Hang Jebat. A sweet tooth's delight
serving all manner of refreshing desserts including baba
cendol (RM3). There are plenty of hearty savoury portions
too - try the baba laksa (noodles with egg, prawn and
tuna; RM5). Mon-Thurs 10am-6pm, Fri & Sat 10am-9pm,
Sun 10am-6.30pm.
Limau-Limau 9 Jln Hang Lekiu. Cosy little café set on two
floors and dotted with little knick-knacks and mismatched
furniture. The light menu includes soups (RM7.90), sand-
wiches (RM11.90) and focaccia cheese melts (RM18.90),
as well as freshly squeezed juices, milkshakes and lassis
(RM8). Thurs-Tues 9am-6pm.
