Kopi C @ China House 153 & 155 Lebuh Pantai. Housed
within the China House arts space, this pleasant café is a
sweet tooth's delight, harbouring recipes to over 100
delectable cakes, all lovingly prepared by the pastry chefs.
The bread (RM10) is home-made too, and there's all-day
breakfast (from RM14) as well as international dishes with
fusion and Middle Eastern flavours. Daily 9am-midnight,

The Leaf Healthy House 5 Lebuh Penang. Laidback
Chinese veggie café perfect for a healthy pit stop as you
explore town; there are nyonya dishes, noodles, high-
fibre rice and spaghetti (RM5.90), as well as exceptional
fresh juices. Weekdays there's a set lunch menu for only

Armenian Street. They have all been fully
renovated to reflect the town's historical

(RM55) and “double bed” (RM99; sleeps two) cubicles - all

socket - look just like soft squares of tofu. The welcoming
eco-friendly owners encourage recycling and rent out
bikes for the day. There's also a wonderful café serving
great scones and h ome-made mu ns. Break fast included.

Line Clear Lebuh Chulia at Jln Penang. Hands down
one of Georgetown's best nasi kandar (rice with curry) at
this no-frills hawker stall where an exceptionally tasty
meal will set you back no more than RM10. Daily 24hr.
Micke's Place 94 Love Lane. Travellers scribble their
musings all over the walls of this itty-bitty café serving
local and Western dishes, from pancakes (RM9) to pastas
(RM13). Mon-Sat 4-11pm.
EATING
Penang is all about hawker food. There are hawker stalls
on most street corners, serving cheap and tasty dishes
including the local favourite, Penang laksa - noodles in
thick fish soup garnished with vegetables, pineapple and
belacan (shrimp paste). There's a choice of hawker stalls
on Lebuh Kimberley and Lebuh Cintra, and a fantastic food
court on Lebuh Leith.
Café Mews 77 Lebuh Muntri. A pleasant escape from the
city's stifling heat, this café has indoor seating as well as a
secluded outdoor area. The menu mainly consists of local
dishes (try the nyonya laksa lemak ; coconut and fish based
soup RM18). Live music performances on Sat at 9pm, from
jazz to R&B. Daily 8am-11pm.
CNN Go Hokkien Mee Lebuh Pantai at Jln Perangin.
This truly local hawker joint seems to have adopted this
name following a CNN report on its much sought-after
hokkien mee , shrimp noodles (RM3.50) - make sure you
get here early. Tues-Sun 7am-1pm.
Cozy in the Rocket 262 & 264 Lebuh Pantai. This arty café
has an eclectic choice of furniture and a pleasant outdoor
garden with little potted plants. The changing menu is
scribbled on the board; breakfasts (RM15), great coffees
(RM6) and pasta dishes (RM23). Tues-Sun 10am-5pm.
The Daily Dose 80 Lebuh Carnarvon. The New Mexican
owner, artist and chef at this chilled café with laidback
The Mugshot 302 Lebuh Chulia. This friendly café
offers freshly made yoghurt served in cute glass jars with
imaginative toppings, from kiwi and honey to walnuts
and raisins, and tasty home-made bagels prepared in the
little wood-fired oven. There's a great bakery attached,
too, and free wi-fi. Daily 8am-9pm.
Red Garden Night Market 20 Lebuh Leith. Penangites'
favourite food court boasts an array of scrumptious dishes:
grilled seafood, claypot noodles, hokkien mee (prawn
noodles), Indian curries and Thai food. Mains from RM6.
Sushi Kitchen 12 Gat Lebuh Acheh. The vegan dishes at
this small Japanese restaurant are served at low tables
where barefooted customers sit on tatami mats. All the
ingredients are fresh, with no artificial colouring, preserva-
tives or MSG. Sushi (RM8.80), udon noodles (RM7.80) and
plenty more on offer. Wed-Fri 11.30am-9.30pm, Sat &
Sun 11.30am-2.30pm & 6-10pm.
Tek Sen 18-20 Lebuh Carnarvon. This hugely popular
place gets packed at lunch and dinner with hungry
customers who flock here for the sought-after Chinese
grub. Try the double-roasted pork (RM14); the home-
made tofu (RM10) also goes down a treat. Wed-Mon
noon-2.30pm & 6-9pm.
