geometric latticework of the unusually
angular Masjid Negara (National Mosque;
daily 9am-noon, 3-4pm & 5.30-
6.30pm; closed Fri morning), flanked by
a row of fountains. Full-length lilac-
coloured robes are loaned to visitors at
the entrance, and the tiled floors are
pleasantly cool under bare feet. hough
non-Muslims may not enter the prayer
hall, they can still admire its interior
- and attractive stained-glass windows
- from the entrance.
his fascinating collection of Islamic
textiles, ceramics and metalwork from
countries as diverse as Iran, Kazakhstan
and China is housed in a splendid
building with an inside-out dome.
Check out the calligraphic exhibits,
which include hand-written sections of
the Koran; some of the intricate and
beautiful sections date back a thousand
years. A vast gallery upstairs has scale
replicas of some of the world's most
beautiful mosques; you'll be amazed at
the diverse architectural styles that stem
from one religion. If you get hungry
after your visit, stop by the good
Middle Eastern restaurant on the
ground floor which offers an
inexpensive lunch deal.
Islamic Arts Museum
Behind the mosque on Jalan Lembah
Perdana is the ultramodern Islamic Arts
Museum (daily 10am-6pm; RM12),
one of the highlights of a visit to KL.
