August 1965 Following tensions between the Malay-
dominated UMNO Alliance Party in KL and Lee Kuan Yew in
Singapore, Singapore leaves the Federation.
1969 When the UMNO Alliance loses parliamentary
elections, rioting breaks out in major cities. Hundreds of
Chinese are killed. The country remains under a state of
emergency for nearly two years.
1970 Rahman resigns, handing over to Tun Abdul Razak,
also from UMNO, who introduces positive discrimination
for ethnic Malays, known as bumiputra , which gives them
favoured positions in business and professions. This remains
a major cause of ethnic tension within Malaysia today.
1981 UMNO leader Dr Mahathir Mohammed becomes
prime minister.
2003 Mahathir hands over the premiership to Abdullah
Badawi.
2007 Malaysia celebrates fifty years of independence.
March 2008 Badawi and the UMNO scrape to victory
in elections.
April 2008 Pakatan Rakyat, an informal Malaysian
political coalition party, is formed by the former Deputy
Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim. It is comprised and
collectively managed by the People's Justice Party (PKR),
Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Pan-Malaysian Islamic
Party (PAS), following their success in a number of states
in the March general election.
July 2009 Thousands of people protest on the streets of
Kuala Lumpur against the Internal Security Act, which
allows for the arrest and detention without trial of any
individual deemed a threat to national security.
2010 A Malaysian court rules that a Roman Catholic
newspaper could use the world “Allah” to describe the
Christian God in its Malay-language edition. Churches are
attacked by protest Muslim groups in Kuala Lumpur, Perak
and Sarawak.
2013 The ruling National Front retains power in the
national elections.
