5
people, most of whom are Vietnamese,
Chinese or Lao. Occupying a bend in the
Xe Kong River, with coconut palms and
banana trees shading spacious wooden
houses with generous balconies, the town
is known throughout southern Laos as
the “Garden City.” Although it was near
this distant outpost that the Ho Chi
Minh Trail diverged, with one artery
running south towards Cambodia and
the other into South Vietnam, Attapeu
somehow eluded the grave effects of war
and remains an easy-going place that's
ideal for leisurely wandering. his
region of Laos has one of the country's
highest rates of malaria, so heed the
advice on p.37.
ACCOMMODATION AND EATING
Eating well in Attapeu isn't especially easy: try the market,
the downstairs restaurant at Dúc Lôc (see below), or head
to one of the bars near the riverfront - though these are
more about beer and karaoke than decent dinners.
Dúc Lôc In the city centre, on the south side of Route 18
T 020 9982 2334. Very well-run Vietnamese place close
to the market, and convenient for those heading to the
Bo Y border crossing. The wood-panelled rooms feel very
fresh, with TV and a/c to boot. Downstairs there's a
restaur ant servi ng good Vietnamese pho for 10,000K.
Double 80,000K
Sokpaseud Riverside Guesthouse South of the centre
along the main river road T 030 9990773. Slightly twee,
this mansion-like guesthouse just across the road from the
Xe Kong is an excellent budget choice. Chandeliers hang
from the wooden ceilings and room s are unexpectedly
good for the money. Double 80,000K
ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

northwestern outskirts of the city, 4km from the centre.

with shared tuk-tuks on hand for the run into town
