WHAT TO SEE AND DO
Pakse is short on proper tourist
attractions. he two main sights are both
just east of the town centre on Route 13
and easily reachable by bicycle or tuk-tuk.
he first is the Champasak Palace Hotel ,
a majestic eyesore resembling a giant
cement wedding cake. Legend has it
that the late Prince Boun Oum na
Champasak, a colourful character who
was the heir to the Champasak kingdom
and one of the most influential
southerners of the twentieth century,
needed a palace this size so that he could
accommodate his many concubines. It is
now a hotel.
he second attraction, 500m further
along Route 13, is the Champasak
Provincial Museum (Mon-Fri 8am-
11.30am & 1.30-4pm; 10,000K), which
houses some fine examples of ornately
carved pre-Angkorian sandstone lintels
taken from sites around the province.
Also worth a visit is the huge New Market
(Talat Dao Heuang), south of the museum.
Along with the usual array of mounds of
corridor from the Annamite Mountains
that form Laos's border with Vietnam.
Much of the area east of the Mekong
lies off the beaten track and involves
hard journeys on bumpy roads. One
city well worth making the effort to see,
though, is Attapeu , known as the
garden city for its pleasant atmosphere
and laidback pace.

PAKSE
Located at the confluence of the Xe Don
and Mekong rivers, roughly halfway
between the hai border and the Bolaven
Plateau, PAKSE is the far south's biggest
city and its commercial and transport
hub. For travellers, it is usually a stopover
en route to Si Phan Don and Cambodia,
and it makes a comfortable base for
exploring the Bolaven Plateau (see
p.402), with its excellent waterfalls. here
is also a border crossing to hailand just
west of Pakse at Chong Mek, making it a
logical entry or exit point for travellers
doing a north-south tour of Laos.
