CHRONOLOGY
Iron Age The Plain of Jars in the northeast dates from around
2000 years ago, and is the earliest known indigenous culture
in Laos.
First century AD Indian traders introduce Buddhism to
Southeast Asia; between the sixth and ninth centuries,
upper Laos is dominated by the Theravada Buddhist
culture of the Mon people, known as Dvaravati.
Ninth century The Hindu Khmer Empire of Angkor
expands across the whole region, building dozens of
Angkor-style temples.
1353 With Khmer support, exiled prince Fa Ngum takes
Luang Prabang (then called Xieng Dong Xieng Thong).
He establishes the Lane Xang Hom Khao Empire, the
“Kingdom of a Million Elephants and the White Parasol”,
and extends its borders.
1512 The golden Buddha image, the Pha Bang, is brought
to Xieng Dong Xieng Thong from Vientiane by King Visoun
(1500-20), establishing it as the symbol of a unified
Buddhist kingdom.
1563 With the Burmese Empire encroaching, the capital is
moved to Vientiane, but the Pha Bang statue is left, and
