TREAT YOURSELF
Even if you can't afford to stay for the
night, the Hotel Pantai Gapura on
Jl Pasar Ikan 10 ( T 0411 368 0222,
W pantaigapura.com) provides an
excellent shelter from the heat and
hurly-burly outside. Wend your way
through the maze of bungalows,
perched on stilts above the sea, to
the sunset bar in the far right corner,
where you can enjoy a drink, cool
breeze and sea view. There's also a
lovely pool available to non-guests
for Rp30,00 0. Rooms are cheaper
Sun-Thurs. Rp640,000
GETTING AROUND
Becaks Makassar's becak drivers are annoyingly persis-
tent, and there's a good chance of ending up somewhere
completely unexpected; a fare of Rp8000/km is reason-
able. Bargain hard. Rp20,000 to Paotere.
Pete-petes Makassar's blue pete-petes (bemos) charge
Rp4500, and most terminate at or near Karebosi. They
have their routes written on the windscreen, colour-coded
for different destinations; the most useful is the purple
one to Terminal Daya.
Taxis Bosowa ( T 0411 454545) is the recommended firm.
restaurant, with staff who will make recommendations if
you look confused; a one-person fish comes to about
Rp30,000. The main doors are permanently closed, but
follow the painted fish to the side entrance. Daily
9.30am-midnight.
Patene Jl Sulawesi 48. In the centre of the Chinese
quarter, this large, clean and colourful place offers decent
portions of Indonesian food ( nasi campur Rp25,000, gado
gado Rp15,000). Daily 9am-10pm.
ACCOMMODATION
Asoka Jl Latumahina 21/38 T 0411 873476. The
friendly owners rent out five lovely a/c rooms in a
huge, elegant house just around the corner from the
seafront Aryaduta H otel . Price includes wi-fi and
breakfast. Rp300,000
Bali Jl Sungai Pareman III 15-17 T 0411 362 0071.
Although large and anonymous, this is a good option if
Wisma Mulia just down the road is full, and even the
cheapest rooms have windows. Breakfast and wi-fi are
included, and guest s pay a Rp100,000 deposit upon
check-in. Rp165,000
New Legend Jl Jampea 5G T 0411 361 3777, W new
legendhostel.com. The backpacker favourite, with a
common room, dorm and restaurant serving free break-
fasts on the top floor. Though cheaper than elsewhere,
basic rooms are windowless and stuffy. A mor e upmarke t
version of the same name sits next door. Dorm Rp75,000 ,

Wisma Mulia Jl Sungai Pareman III 1 T 0411 365 0967.
Friendly and immaculate, this is the best value for money
in town. The cheaper rooms lack windows, but are large,
with cable tel evision, a/c and en-suite bathrooms. Break-

Banks and exchange Most banks have ATMs, with
many located along Jl Jend A Yani and at the northeast
corner of Medan Karebosi. The best moneychanger in
town is Haji La Tunrung, by the seafront at the southern
end of Jl Nusantara.
Hospitals Stella Maris, Jl Penghibur ( T 0411 873346),
is your best chance in southern Sulawesi for correct
diagnosis and treatment by English-speaking staff.
Immigration Jl Perintis Kemerdekaan Km 13,
Tamalanrea ( T 0411 584559). Set northeast of town
towards the airport; not the easiest place in Indonesia
for a visa extension.
Internet There's wi-fi in many hotels and restaurants,
while Xpress Cybercafe at Jl Ujung Pandang 12A has
terminals (Rp5000/hr).
Pharmacy Kimia Farma on Jl Ahmad Yani.
Police Jl Ahmad Yani.
Post o ce Jl Slamet Riyadi near Fort Rotterdam (Mon-

Shopping The huge MTC Karebosi on the northeast
corner of Medan Karebosi is a good place to cool off and
shop for bargains.

EATING AND DRINKING
Wander past Fort Rotterdam of an evening, and the
shabby patch of concrete opposite will have woken up and
filled with warungs, mostly serving fish.
Kampoeng Pops Jl Ujung Pandang 4. Pleasant water-
front patio just opposite Fort Rotterdam, surrounded by
Indonesian, Western and Japanese fast-food stalls (dishes
from Rp20,000), featuring live rock music on weekends.
