DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
Senggigi is the only place on mainland Lombok with any
sort of nightlife, but it is extremely sedate, in keeping with
local sensibilities. The following are all on the main road
in central Senggigi.
Marina Café Jl Raya Senggigi T 0370 693136, W marina
senggigi.com. Senggigi's main club has DJs playing every
night, on-stage dancers, live sport on the big screens and
pool tables. Mon-Fri 7pm-2am, Sat & Sun 9pm-3am.
Papaya Café Jl Raya Senggigi. Lively, friendly bar with
deafeningly loud live music from 8pm every night, plus
fantastic grilled fish (whole snapper Rp50,000) if you need
something to soak up the alcohol. Daily noon until late.
Dharmarie Jl Raya Senggigi T 0370 693050. These a/c
bungalows are a little frayed around the edges, but are
more than a cceptable. Some bungalows have sea views.

1377. Centrally located, great-value place tucked away in
a small garden offering cl ean, fan-coo led digs with private

Raja's Bungalows Off Jl Arjuna T 0812 373 4171,
E rajas22@yahoo.com. Raja's has four pretty and clean,
budget bungalows with fans and attache d cold-water
bathrooms set in a lush garden. Rp150,000
EATING
The beach at the end of the road to Senggigi Beach Hotel
comes alive in the afternoons with sate sellers. In the
evenings, the roadside area next to the post o ce is filled
with food stalls - it is known locally as the “Blue Tent”.
Bale Tajuk Café Jl Raya Senggigi. Cheerful central place
with a big menu of Indonesian, Sasak and Western food
(most mains under Rp40,000); if you're hungry, go for the
set meal for two. Daily 10am-10pm.
Bumbu Jl Raya Senggigi. Small, popular place in central
Senggigi. The Thai food (curries around Rp50,000) is
excellent, but tell the waiters if you can't cope with industrial
quantities of chilli. There are plenty of other options, inclu-
ding steaks and sandwiches. Daily 9am-11pm.
Café Alberto Batu Bolong T 0370 693039, W cafealberto
lombok.com. In a great beachfront location, perfect for a
sundowner before dinner, Café Alberto has delicious home-
made pasta (around Rp55,000), thin-crust pizzas and
limoncello (Rp20,000/glass). Daily 8.30am-midnight.
DIRECTORY
Banks and exchange There are several ATMs that accept
international cards on the main road, as well as a few
moneychangers.
Car and motorbike rental Plenty of places rent vehicles
with and without drivers. Check the insurance at the time of
renting. Cars from around Rp180,000/day, motorbikes from
Rp50,000/day, bicycles from Rp30,000/day. Chartering a
car with a driver costs around Rp450,000/day.
Doctor Senggigi Beach Hotel ( T 0370 693210, W senggigi
beachhotel.com; 24hr) can put you in touch with one. There
are also hospitals in Ampenan-Mataram-Cakranegara-Sweta
(see p.282).
Internet There are several internet cafés on the main
street.
Police The tourist police ( T 0370 632733) are on the
main road.
Post o ce In the centre of Senggigi (Mon-Thurs
7.30am-5pm, Fri & Sat 7.30am-4pm).
Shopping The main road has several good-quality craft
shops selling items from across the island. The art market,
Pasar Seni, at the north end of the main road in central
Senggigi, is full of craft stalls.

De Quake Off Jl Raya Senggigi, behind the Art Market

enjoy a sunset margarita on their seaside terrace before
digging into a barbecued steak with mashed potato and
pepper sauce or one of their excellent Thai dishes (most
around Rp30,000-60,000). Popular with expats. Daily
11am-11pm.
Warung Menega 3km south of Senggigi. A simple
place on the coast, easily spotted by the sign on the main
road, with delectable seafood sold by weight or in good-
value set meals (from Rp90,000 including drinks). Daily
10am-11pm.
THE GILI ISLANDS
Strikingly beautiful, with glorious
white-sand beaches lapped by warm,
brilliant-blue waters, the three Gili Islands
just off the northwest coast of Lombok
are a magnet for visitors. Of the three,
Gili Trawangan best fits the image of
“party island”, with heaps of accommo-
dation, restaurants and nightlife. he
smallest of the islands, Gili Meno , has
no nightlife and is known as the
“honeymoon island” for its secluded
atmosphere. Closest to the mainland is
Gili Air which offers a mix of the two,
with plenty of facilities in the south and

restaurant-bar, well worth splashing out
in. The menu features escargots, foie gras,
USDA steaks, and baby pigeon, all expertly
prepared (mains under Rp100,000). Fine
